What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session

Taking the first step toward therapy is a powerful act of self-care. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, curious about your emotional patterns, or simply ready to invest in your mental health, showing up to that first session is something to be proud of.

But if you're unsure of what to expect, you're not alone. Many people feel nervous or hesitant before their first therapy appointment—not knowing what will happen, what to say, or if they’ll “do it right.” (Spoiler alert: there’s no such thing as doing it wrong!)

Here’s a gentle guide to help you know what to expect, so you can feel a little more grounded walking through that door—or logging onto that Zoom call.

At the start, your therapist’s goal is to help you feel as comfortable as possible. There’s no pressure to dive into your life story right away. Instead, expect a warm introduction, a quick overview of confidentiality and what therapy involves, and a space where you can exhale and just be.

Whether you’re working with a Black therapist, seeking faith-friendly care, or exploring therapy for the first time, a culturally sensitive therapist will meet you with respect, compassion, and curiosity—not judgment.

2. Sharing Your Story (at Your Pace)

Your therapist may ask a few open-ended questions like:

  • “What brought you in today?”

  • “Have you been in therapy before?”

  • “What are you hoping to get out of this process?”

You don’t have to have all the answers. Some people come with a specific concern—like anxiety, relationship stress, or grief—while others just know they don’t feel like themselves lately. Both are valid starting points.

3. Getting to Know You—Beyond the Surface

Expect some questions about your background, health history, family dynamics, and current stressors. This helps your therapist understand the bigger picture of your life. Remember, you can choose what to share and when. Therapy is a journey, not a race.

4. Setting the Tone for the Work Ahead

Your therapist might work with you to:
